Downtown Greensboro Prepares to light the Big Tree

Downtown Greensboro will light the Big Tree this Friday, December 6.  The event is Greensboro’s official kick off for the holiday season and will take place from 6 to 8 pm.

Bring the whole family for an evening of holiday music, food, fun, and shopping. Santa Claus is coming to town! It is rumored that Santa will arrive on a big red fire engine this year…instead of his sleigh; so children, get your wish lists ready, and make sure you’re in historic downtown Greensboro when he arrives at 6 pm.

Activities for the children include visiting the craft tent on Main Street in front of the Court House where they can make a Christmas Ornament for their trees at home. Children can also visit Santa himself in Santa’s workshop.

Come for dinner at the event!  Find a warm, cozy booth at one of Greensboro’s downtown restaurants or visit the Washington Grass Inn’s Christmas Café under the big tent in North Main Street for homemade potato soup and barbeque “sammies”.  Stop by the Future Farmers of America (FFA) fire pit and roast a marshmallow for dessert or pick up some cookies from First Call Pregnancy Center. Stay warm with a cup of hot apple cider prepared by the Knights of Columbus, or purchase homemade goodies from the Liberty Methodist Church ladies group.

The whole family can enjoy an old-fashioned tractor-pulled hayride with Ray Foster and family!

Christmas carolers and community churches will be singing favorite holiday tunes on stage in front of the Court House lawn. Beginning at 6pm, the Lake Oconee Academy concert band will perform a few holiday favorites including “Chaotic Christmas” and “Here Comes Santa Clause”. Then at 7 pm, the Honorable Mayor Glenn Wright will lead everyone in the countdown to light the tree. Up next will be Eatonton Harmonettes performing all of your favorite Christmas songs in a barbershop quartet. Festival Hall House Manager, Gene Yaws, with his very talented voice will entertain the crowd with wonderful Christmas Carols. Ending the night’s entertainment schedule is Rodricus Momford, an Oconee Idol finalist and a member of the Greensboro Police Department.  All of this talent will surely help get you get into the holiday season.  It is not too late to for other church choirs or singing groups to join in the fun.  Groups that are interested in performing downtown during the event should contact Kendrick Harris in the Greensboro Main Street office at (706) 453-7674.

As the sleigh bells ring, Greensboro’s downtown shops are looking forward to spreading their holiday spirit to their customers. Friday night, be sure to mark everyone off your list with the help of downtown’s jolly merchants. Keep in mind that you’re shopping small, and you won’t have to deal with hectic traffic and crowds of the typical shopping mall.  Make Greensboro your shopping destination this holiday season! Shoppers can take advantage of extended holiday shopping hours all season long Friday and Saturday evenings from now and continuing through December 2
3.

Greensboro Selects Christmas Tree

Greensboro has chosen its Christmas Tree!

After an appeal to the community for just the right tree, the Greensboro Main Street program announces that the city’s official Christmas Tree will be donated by Mr. & Mrs. Dick Wolfe.

“Mr. Wolfe wrote a letter explaining that he had a tree he would like to donate,” explains Kendrick Harris Greensboro Main Street Event Coordinator.   “Mr. Wolfe’s cedar will make a wonderful Christmas tree for all of Greene County to enjoy this holiday season”.

City workers will deliver the tree to the Court House lawn the week before Thanksgiving where it will be decorated in time for the downtown tree lighting.   The tree lighting celebration will take place on the Courthouse lawn from 6-8 pm on Friday, December 6.

There will be an old-fashioned hayride through town, and your favorite holiday tunes sung ‘round the tree!  Greensboro’s Tree Lighting event is a family favorite for the Lake Oconee area with an evening of music, food, holiday fun, and of course Santa!

The City of Greensboro reports that they have received a special request from the North Pole for a fire truck escort the evening of the tree lighting.  City officials can only imagine that the escort must be for Santa himself!  “We figure with the lack of snow in Greensboro that Santa’s sleigh just wouldn’t be able to make the trip into town,” comments an anonymous city employee.  Children, be sure to be in historic downtown Greensboro when Santa makes his entrance at 6 pm.

Local organizations and non-profits are encouraged to participate in the event. This year Future Farmers of America (FFA) will do their famous marshmallow roast and camp fires, Knights of Columbus will have hot cocoa and cider, First Call Pregnancy Center will have cookies and the Liberty Methodist Ladies will have wonderful goodies to sell. Your organization is welcome to take this opportunity to fundraise with goodies such as hot chocolate, baked goods, hot apple cider, candied apples and or other holiday favorites.  Choirs and choral groups are invited to carol the historic downtown throughout the evening.  To register your organization, your choirs and or choral groups please contact the Main Street office at (706) 453-7674.

Greensboro’s friendly merchants are ready to help you get all of your holiday shopping done this season – without the hectic traffic and crowds of your typical shopping mall.  Shoppers can take advantage of extended holiday shopping hours on Friday and Saturday evenings from now and continuing through December 23.

Keep an eye on your local news for additional details as Greensboro’s Holiday Plans progress and don’t forget to Shop Greensboro First this holiday season!

Small Business Saturday coming November 30

We all know about Black Friday. And there’s even Cyber Monday.  But Downtown Greensboro is most excited about Small Business Saturday, the day we all shop small and support small business around the country.

Small Business Saturday is November 30, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and it is quickly becoming one of the biggest shopping days of the year for small business.

“Small Business Saturday is a national promotion spearheaded by American Express,” explains Greensboro Main Street Director, Cail Hammons.  “The movement has carved out a niche for small businesses in the busy opening weekend of holiday shopping, and Greensboro is happy to take part in the excitement.”

Small Businesses Saturday encourages consumers to go out and celebrate small businesses in force. This helps local entrepreneurs offer more jobs, which in turn invigorates the economy. Shoppers go out and support their favorite small business and search for savings on unique merchandise while experiencing spectacular service – a cornerstone of many small businesses.

Consumers are a key part in helping small businesses thrive. By shopping or dining at a small business throughout the year, you’re showing your support for all the small businesses in your neighborhood and reinvesting in the community you call home.

American Express cardholders can even register for a one-time $10 statement credit when you shop during Small Business Saturday.

“Greensboro is a terrific place to shop year-round,” says Hammons. “But our shop owners are especially looking forward to showing off Greensboro’s famous small town service to our customers this holiday season.”
