Downtown Greensboro Prepares to light the Big Tree
Downtown Greensboro will light the Big Tree this Friday, December 6. The event is Greensboro’s official kick off for the holiday season and will take place from 6 to 8 pm.
Bring the whole family for an evening of holiday music, food, fun, and shopping. Santa Claus is coming to town! It is rumored that Santa will arrive on a big red fire engine this year…instead of his sleigh; so children, get your wish lists ready, and make sure you’re in historic downtown Greensboro when he arrives at 6 pm.
Activities for the children include visiting the craft tent on Main Street in front of the Court House where they can make a Christmas Ornament for their trees at home. Children can also visit Santa himself in Santa’s workshop.
Come for dinner at the event! Find a warm, cozy booth at one of Greensboro’s downtown restaurants or visit the Washington Grass Inn’s Christmas Café under the big tent in North Main Street for homemade potato soup and barbeque “sammies”. Stop by the Future Farmers of America (FFA) fire pit and roast a marshmallow for dessert or pick up some cookies from First Call Pregnancy Center. Stay warm with a cup of hot apple cider prepared by the Knights of Columbus, or purchase homemade goodies from the Liberty Methodist Church ladies group.
The whole family can enjoy an old-fashioned tractor-pulled hayride with Ray Foster and family!
Christmas carolers and community churches will be singing favorite holiday tunes on stage in front of the Court House lawn. Beginning at 6pm, the Lake Oconee Academy concert band will perform a few holiday favorites including “Chaotic Christmas” and “Here Comes Santa Clause”. Then at 7 pm, the Honorable Mayor Glenn Wright will lead everyone in the countdown to light the tree. Up next will be Eatonton Harmonettes performing all of your favorite Christmas songs in a barbershop quartet. Festival Hall House Manager, Gene Yaws, with his very talented voice will entertain the crowd with wonderful Christmas Carols. Ending the night’s entertainment schedule is Rodricus Momford, an Oconee Idol finalist and a member of the Greensboro Police Department. All of this talent will surely help get you get into the holiday season. It is not too late to for other church choirs or singing groups to join in the fun. Groups that are interested in performing downtown during the event should contact Kendrick Harris in the Greensboro Main Street office at (706) 453-7674.
As the sleigh bells ring, Greensboro’s downtown shops are looking forward to spreading their holiday spirit to their customers. Friday night, be sure to mark everyone off your list with the help of downtown’s jolly merchants. Keep in mind that you’re shopping small, and you won’t have to deal with hectic traffic and crowds of the typical shopping mall. Make Greensboro your shopping destination this holiday season! Shoppers can take advantage of extended holiday shopping hours all season long Friday and Saturday evenings from now and continuing through December 23.
